AQLAD
FAÇADE DETAIL DESIGN
AQLAD are able to provide a range of levels of façade detail design services, from a standard package assisting architects in the development of a design through to a more comprehensive option where the subcontractor does not have to produce any design whatsoever.
The higher level of service substitutes the subcontractor’s design responsibilities with those provided by the façade engineering consultant. Actions include the completion of full sectional details, elevations and working drawings showing all building interfaces, bracketry, other structural components and all methods of construction.
There are a number of overall benefits associated with this approach that save costs; reduces the programme, improves the project design quality and stability even in the event of the demise of the subcontractor.
COMPLEX GEOMETRY
Traditional boundaries limiting architectural vision and concept no longer apply to modern architecture. Many contemporary state of the art buildings require advanced design techniques to successfully implement complex geometry façade designs.
AQLAD believes that balancing form and function should not be a constrictive process. Offsite construction methods utilised to execute such complex façades require highly accurate and carefully co-ordinated design information. To maintain cost plans, robust design solutions must be employed which can be efficiently installed.
Utilising bespoke systems is often the only viable solution for highly complex façades. An in depth understanding of façade system solutions, materials and manufacturing methods is essential. Irregular façade surfaces, single curved, bi-curved, twisted or free forms surfaces developed from discrete planar elements create complex geometry. Available techniques can regularise panels within irregular curved surfaces. Gradient similarities within different sections are analysed to enhance the use of repeating panel configuration. Finite amounts of deviation from nodal points may be specified to further optimise the façade construction. Deviation may be either be limited to the surface plane only or deviations in façade depth may also be allowed.
BIM Technology
Building Information Modelling is a process of managing the use of digital 3D building models to facilitate collaboration in the design process. A BIM model contains all the information necessary to define the project design. The use of BIM has demonstrated benefits in both design and construction, improving quality, lowering costs and reducing schedules. As a result of these benefits, the use of BIM will become mandatory on most publicly funded projects in the Scandinavia. AQLAD has taken a leading role in the generation and implementation of BIM façade design models, helping to implement this technology specifically within the façade industry.
For the façade engineer, Building Information Modelling can allow for greater, more effective communication of details and quantities of a building between designers, architects and construction workers. The model is shared usually in a 3D digital form with significantly greater accuracy. The distribution of this information creates an ideal environment for those involved on a project to work together efficiently and effectively, with any changes being taken care of more immediately and cost effectively. A BIM model can also be used to perform analysis on important elements such as daylighting, thermal acoustical, structural and cost estimation at key points in the design and construction process.
